How to Choose the Right Protein Powder

Having a quality protein powder is a smart move if you want to make positive changes! With that being said, choosing the correct kind of protein powder for your lifestyle can often be a difficult path to navigate. Protein powders will differ in their composition and the primary benefits they have to offer, so becoming aware of these differences will enable you to choose the best one for your situation.

One of the most fundamental things to look for when choosing a protein powder is the quality of ingredient. When in the aisle of the grocery store or even browsing online, be sure the first thing you look at is the nutritional label and ingredients. It’s also important to keep in mind that ingredients are always listed in the order of predominance. One thing to make sure is not in the ingredients?  Added sugars. If the protein powder itself is sweetened, make sure it something that responds with your body. For example, monk fruit acts as a great natural sweetener.

When speaking about vegan protein, most of the source is pea. Make sure when purchasing a pea protein, you go for an organic, non GMO pea. One thing I do tell both my men and women clients, is to stay away from soy protein. Soy contains plant estrogens in the form of isoflavones which effectively raise your estrogen levels and therefore lowers your testosterone levels. Those hormones are in competition so more of one means less of the other. Messing up your estrogen levels has harsh effects for men and women as well as children and newborns.

Hemp protein is a good vegan source but typically comes with not as great as a taste. Hemp protein also is usually sweetened with cane sugar,  make sure you are looking for hemp protein powders that are sweetened with monk fruit. When looking at whey protein you want to make sure that the cow is 100% grass fed.

Overall, protein is a piece of the big picture. You need veggies for their minerals, polyphenols, and antioxidants. You need the right carbs and fats at the right times. Still, getting the correct protein can wake up your brain, your metabolism, and your power!
